Driving Tips for South Africa

Driving your rental car in South Africa is easy with these tips:

  • Speed Limits: In built-up areas, the speed limit is usually 60 km/h (35 mph). However, national highways and motorways have speed limits up to 120 km/h (75 mph).
  • At the Pump: Pumping your own gas is illegal in South Africa. The attendant will fill your tank and also wash your windows if you’d like.
  • Night Driving: Make sure your doors are locked and windows are closed. This is especially important at traffic lights. Also, watch for wild animals when driving in rural areas.
  • Parking Attendants: Many places in South Africa offer free parking, but you should give the parking attendant a tip.
  • First Come, First Served: At four-way stops, the first car at the line gets the right of way.

Before you hit the road, learn about protection options when you rent a car in South Africa.

Best places to visit in South Africa

Experience the beauty of South Africa, from the savannas to the coasts, when you book a car rental with SIXT.

  • Knysna: Located along the Garden Route, Knysna is a beach destination where you can kayak in the Knysna Lagoon or relax on the sand. Many hiking areas, including Steenbok Nature Reserve, are only a short drive away in your rental car.
  • Namaqualand: For hundreds of thousands of wildflowers spread over rolling hills, head to Namaqua National Park between late August and mid-September. Renting a car allows you to see the flowers in many places and travel at your own pace.
  • Hermanus: Drive to Hermanus between June and November to see the Southern Right Whales. While you’re in town, stop at Hermanus Country Market for baked goods and local produce.
